On Tuesday morning, The Tigers inked star shortstop Javier Baez to a 6-year, $140 million deal. The Tigers were linked to another star shortstop, though: Carlos Correa. Manager A.J. Hinch, the former manager of the Houston Astros, was assumed to Correa due to their time spent in Houston together.
However, Javier Baez will be the shortstop of the Tigers for the future as the look to build a team that can contend year in and year out. That has been a struggle for Detroit. They have not had a winning record since 2016 and have not been to the playoffs since 2014.
The Tigers are looking to build around numerous high draft picks including two first and a fifth overall draft selection, Casey Mize (Auburn), Spencer Torkleson (ASU), and Riley Greene (HS).
The Tigers have signed their shortstop of the future in Javier Baez. Will the combination of young talent be enough to compete in a tough AL Central? They haven’t competed for the division title since winning it in 2014 so I hope they can deliver for their fanbase who hasn’t had much to cheer for with the Tigers not their NFL team, The Lions.
